Ex-cop Syed Ali Jailed for Harassing Woman Over Work Phone
Six Weeks’ Jail Suspended, Community Order for Ex-Officer
Syed Ali, 46, once part of the East Area Command Unit, was sentenced at Westminster Magistrates’ Court on Wednesday, 12 May. His punishment includes a six-week prison term suspended for 18 months, plus 200 hours of unpaid community work. He must also pay £200 compensation to the victim and faces a three-year restraining order banning contact with her.
Guilty Plea and Investigation Details
Ali admitted guilt on 24 March at the same court. The case came to light after a complaint on 18 July 2020, triggering an investigation by the Directorate of Professional Standards’ Specialist Investigation Unit.
Harassment Spanned Several Months
- Ali first contacted the woman back in 2015 while working with SO15.
- He moved to East Area Command Unit in 2018.
- Between May and July 2020, Ali bombarded the victim with unwanted messages from his work phone.
- The woman demanded he stop, but Ali ignored her pleas and continued to harass her.
- The harassment ended only after it was formally reported.
Arrest and Legal Action
Ali was arrested at Ilford Police Station on 23 July 2020 following the allegations. His sentencing marks a clear message: inappropriate behaviour by those sworn to protect the public will not be tolerated.
