Man Jailed for Forcing Woman to Drink and Sexually Assaulting Her
On the evening of 2 October 2020, MD Wahiduzzaman Akanda pressured a woman at his workplace to drink alcohol. She refused several times, but he forced her to down cocktails and shots until she became violently ill.
Sexual Assault in Female Toilets
The 39-year-old then followed the victim into the female toilets and sexually assaulted her despite her pleas to stop. Another person heard her crying and tried to check on her, but Akanda lied, saying she was fine. The helper left, unaware of the attack continuing.
Victim Calls Police as Predator Escapes
After Akanda left the toilets, the victim locked herself in a cubicle and called police before fleeing the scene. Officers arrested Akanda the next day.
Charged with two counts of sexual assault, Akanda pleaded not guilty at Maidstone Crown Court. Following a trial, he was found guilty and sentenced on 28 February 2024.
Detective Praises Victim’s Bravery
“Akanda targeted his victim when she was most vulnerable,” said Detective Sergeant Emma Crombie. “He pressured her to drink despite her refusals, knowing she was intoxicated and unable to defend herself.”
“I want to commend the victim for reporting his crime and giving evidence. His denial forced her to relive her trauma during the trial. Her bravery ensures he has been held accountable and other victims protected from this predator.”
