Drugs Dispute Ends in Murder and Cover-Up

Raphael Kokkinos, 34, from Streatham, has admitted manslaughter and perverting the course of justice before his trial even began on April 13, 2022.

Aaron Williams, 29, of Thornton Heath, and Sophia Kokkinos, 70, from Clapham, were found guilty of perverting the course of justice at the Old Bailey on June 22.

All three face sentencing in the coming weeks.

Fatal Fallout from Stolen Drugs

Jean Loike Guei was brutally killed in August 2020 after a dispute over stolen drugs taken from Kokkinos’ home.

Detective Chief Inspector Wayne Jolley said, “Following the burglary, Kokkinos owed Guei a significant amount of money that he had no way of repaying.”

Guei was attacked at Kokkinos’ address and later murdered. Kokkinos then conspired with Williams and his own mother to cover up the crime and avoid detection.

Blood, Fire and a Failed Cover-Up

Guei’s charred body was found on September 17, 2020, after a passerby spotted a fire in bushes near Mitcham Common.

A post-mortem confirmed he was assaulted and killed before being set on fire.

Police uncovered phone records showing Kokkinos and Guei exchanged calls after the burglary. Guei visited Kokkinos’ flat in the early hours of September 15, where police believe Kokkinos killed him quickly.

Williams helped dispose of Guei’s car by faking a sale to a mechanic. CCTV later captured a convoy of cars transporting Guei’s body to Mitcham Common, with officers spotting a bulky object in a car boot.

Williams then sold the vehicle, which smelt heavily of chlorine – an attempt to erase all traces of the victim.

The flat was scrubbed clean, but crime scene investigators found two tiny bloodstains belonging to Guei in the kitchen.

Trial Verdicts and Acquittals

  • Benoni Thomas, 28, of Cambridge, was cleared of manslaughter.
  • Joseph Kokkinos, 32, from Clapham, found not guilty of perverting the course of justice.
  • Michael Brain, 28, of Weybridge, also cleared of perverting the course of justice.

This grim case highlights the deadly consequences of drug disputes and the lengths some will go to cover their tracks – but police persistence brought the culprits to justice.
