Brutal Murderer Jamie Cook Jailed for Over 20 Years After Unprovoked Killing
Ilford Man Sentenced for Shocking Murder
Jamie Cook, 31, of Asthall Gardens, Ilford, was handed a prison sentence at Snaresbrook Crown Court on Thursday, 23 March. He pleaded guilty to the murder of 67-year-old Hilary Round.
Cook also admitted to two fraud charges. The judge sentenced him to a minimum of 20 years and 205 days, factoring in 160 days already spent on remand.
Disturbing Details Emerge After Police Called
Police were alerted at 1:29pm on 12 October amid concerns for Hilary’s welfare at her De Vere Gardens home in Ilford. Officers forced entry and found her lifeless body.
Hilary had died from compression to the neck, confirmed by a post-mortem examination.
In a chilling twist, Cook called his mother—who lives in the flat below Hilary’s—and admitted he had killed his neighbour “three or four days ago.”
Fraud and Forensics Seal Cook’s Fate
Homicide detectives spotted Cook using Hilary’s bank card in supermarkets and fast food outlets on 6 and 7 October. The stolen card was recovered from Cook’s address in Horns Road, Ilford, where he was soon arrested.
A dressing gown cord found in his mother’s flat was identified as the murder weapon.
Family Tributes Highlight Victim’s Kindness
“She was very kind, caring, friendly, helpful and generous,” said Louise Moseley, Hilary’s sister.
“Hilary saw the best in people, had a strong Christian faith, loved singing with the Seven Kings Gospel Choir, and adored gardening — often helping neighbours and family. She truly wanted to make the world a better place.”
Detective Chief Inspector Jo Yorke summed up the case: “Jamie Cook launched a completely unprovoked attack on a woman in her own home. The callous nature of the murder was made worse by him stealing and using her bank card to buy food. He did not raise the alarm until nearly a week after Hilary had died.”
