Speed Demon Jailed for Killing Pedestrian in 90mph Crash
A man who mowed down and killed a pedestrian while tearing through a London street at 90mph has been locked up for a decade.
Aaron Blackwood Jones Sentenced
Aaron Blackwood Jones, 31, from Vauxhall Street, SE11, was handed a 10-year prison sentence at Southwark Crown Court on Monday, 2 December. He had earlier admitted causing death by dangerous driving and failing to stop after the crash. On top of that, he’ll lose his driving licence for 10 years once released.
Tragic Collision on Brixton Hill
In the early hours of Saturday, 12 January, Blackwood Jones was driving a blue VW Golf at around 90mph in a 30mph zone when he struck 24-year-old Celia Ines Betrouni. She was crossing Brixton Hill near the New Park Road junction.
Despite urgent response from police, Ambulance Service, and London’s Air Ambulance, Celia, a French national, was pronounced dead at the scene.
Hit-and-Run and Arrest
After the crash, Blackwood Jones fled the scene, abandoning his car in Harriet Tubman Close, SW2. A media appeal urged the public to help find him. He eventually turned himself in at a police station on Monday, 14 January and was arrested.
Detective Warns on Dangers of Speeding
“Blackwood Jones was driving at around 90mph in a 30mph zone – his excessive speed meant there was only one outcome when he struck Celia,” said Detective Sergeant Richard Budd of the Met’s Roads and Transport Policing Command.
“His actions have utterly shattered Celia’s family who will have to deal with their loss for the rest of their lives. Blackwood Jones will now spend a significant period of time in prison. His reckless actions offer a clear indication of the devastating impact driving at excessive speed can have.”
