Drunk driver who ploughed into family’s car handed murder charge as victim dies
Victim dies 14 months after horrific crash
Paul suffered paralysis after a car deliberately smashed into his Ford C-Max, seriously injuring his wife in the passenger seat. Tragically, Paul died in hospital 14 months later from pneumonia and sepsis linked to his injuries.
Perpetrator caught and sentenced
Samuel Rogers, 45, from Walsall, was handed a 20-year and six-month prison sentence after a probing West Midlands Police investigation. Rogers pleaded guilty to wounding with intent and two counts of causing serious injury by reckless driving.
He was nearly twice over the legal alcohol limit when he turned his car into a deadly weapon on Melchett Road, Kings Norton.
Cold-blooded attack followed earlier threats
Police revealed Rogers had chased a woman he knew from Stirchley after previously arguing with her. He declared he “wanted her dead” before deliberately ramming the car in front—prompting Paul to pull over to help.
Rogers tried to flee the scene but was soon arrested after paramedics desperately performed CPR on Paul.
Six-year investigation ends in murder charge
Authorities reopened the case after Paul’s death to see if it was caused by Rogers’ attack. Expert doctors confirmed that Paul’s fatal pneumonia and sepsis were a direct result of his injuries.
On June 17 at Birmingham Crown Court, a jury found Rogers guilty of murder. He is due to be sentenced on July 7.
