Football Fan Banned for Homophobic Abuse at Brighton Match
James Grainger-Brown, 30, was caught red-handed spouting homophobic abuse from the away fans’ section during a match at Brighton. Fellow supporters and stewards overheard his offensive remarks and swiftly reported him.
Switched Seats but Abuse Continued
The rowdy bricklayer from Haywards Heath tried to dodge trouble by moving seats at half-time but kept up the hateful chanting. Stewards eventually detained him before the game ended.
Court Hands Down Fine and Three-Year Football Ban
At Brighton Magistrates’ Court on April 20, Grainger-Brown pleaded guilty to using words likely to cause harassment, alarm or distress, the offence aggravated by homophobia.

Police and Club Slam Hate Abuse
“Grainger-Brown used abusive language which caused distress to others in the stadium,” said PC Darren Balkham, football policing officer with 24 years experience combatting homophobia in football.
“Sadly some fans see this abuse as ‘banter’ and hesitate to report it. But attitudes are shifting. Brighton and the FA are firm on tackling homophobic chants.”
A Brighton and Hove Albion club spokesperson added: “We have zero tolerance for all abuse. We worked closely with Sussex Police to bring this culprit to justice and welcome the court’s verdict.”
