Laser Menace in Warwick: Cop Helicopter Targeted Over Town
Alexandru Gheorghe, 28, from Heronfield Close, has been locked up after shining a bright green laser straight into a police helicopter’s cockpit. The shocking incident happened around 10.20pm on 6 May when the National Police Air Service (NPAS) was flying over Warwick.
Swift Police Action Nails Laser Attacker
The NPAS crew quickly traced the laser beam’s source to a property on Rothwell Road. Police swooped on the scene, using thermal imaging and CCTV footage to identify Gheorghe. A search found a laser cap, leading to his arrest and charge for directing a laser beam at air traffic personnel.
Four Months Inside for Dangerous Laser Attack
Gheorghe pleaded guilty and was sentenced at Warwick Crown Court on 14 October. PC Jenn Fitchew slammed the reckless act:
“Shining a laser at any land, water vehicle or aircraft isn’t just a crime – it’s a deadly distraction. The helicopter could have crashed over a busy area. Thankfully, no one was hurt.”
She added, “We hope this sentence puts others off. This crime often flies under the radar but the dangers are real.”
