Rogue Roofer Rips Off Customers with Dodgy Deals
Terry Green, 27, conned vulnerable victims by luring them in with low quotes, only to hit them with eye-watering bills for unnecessary repairs.
Big Bucks for Shoddy Work
Kent Police caught wind of Green’s scam in April 2022 after a Westgate, Thanet resident reported handing over £1,650 for repairs that never happened. The woman had initially been quoted £45 for a single roof tile replacement but ended up paying a hefty deposit for extra work she never got.
Green packed up and vanished when she insisted on getting a second opinion.
Elderly Couple Nearly Scammed £7,000
Two months later, Green targeted an elderly couple in Sandwich. Starting with a modest £350 quote, he quickly inflated the price to £20,000 for a total roof replacement. Eventually, the couple agreed on around £7,000 but only managed to pay £3,090 before their bank flagged the suspicious transactions and stopped further payments.
Justice Served at Maidstone Crown Court
Green, from Mansion Lane, Iver, Buckinghamshire, was arrested in Minster, Thanet, on 13 June 2022. Charged with two counts of fraud, he pleaded guilty and was sentenced on 1 May 2024 at Maidstone Crown Court. Nine more offences were left on file.
Detective Sergeant Adam Stallard said: “Terry Green could have earned an honest living as a roofer but chose to cheat customers out of their hard-earned cash. These crooks cause serious financial hardship and damage trust in honest tradespeople.”
“Green cold-called victims, claiming their homes needed urgent repairs. I urge anyone faced with unsolicited doorstep offers to think twice and always get a second opinion first.”
