Man Jailed for Raping Woman in Her Own Home After Inviting Himself In
Rapist Cookson Sentenced to Five Years
Ian Malcolm Cookson, 55, from Powell Crescent, has been found guilty of raping a 49-year-old woman at her home in Eastleigh. The attack happened between 4pm and 5pm on Thursday, 1 August 2019. The woman had met Cookson for a drink at a local bar and later agreed to let him come back to her house — a decision she would soon regret.
Horrifying Attack in Victim’s Home
After chatting for some time, Cookson forced himself on the woman, putting his hands down her jeans before sexually assaulting and raping her. Throughout the ordeal, the woman protested and shouted for him to stop.
Police Commend Victim’s Bravery and Ongoing Support
Cookson was arrested shortly after the attack and charged with rape in October 2020. Today, he was sentenced to five years in prison.
“This was a truly harrowing crime resulting in Cookson attacking a woman in her own home — a place where she should be safe,” said Police Sergeant Williams of Hampshire Constabulary’s Western Investigation Team.
“I want to pay tribute to the woman for the courage she has shown throughout this investigation. We understand how hard it is for victims to relive such traumatic experiences.”
“Our Operation Amberstone team specialises in rape cases, with specially trained officers dedicated to supporting victims throughout the entire process.”
“We work closely with CPS Wessex to bring offenders to justice. No matter the circumstances, we are committed to supporting survivors and ensuring offenders face the courts.”
“We hope today’s sentence offers some closure for the victim and reassures communities across Hampshire that justice has been served.”
