John Alford Jailed for Over 8 Years for Sexually Assaulting Teen Girls

Trusted Family Friend Betrayed Teens’ Trust

John Alford, 54, formerly known as John Shannon, has been locked up for eight and a half years for sexually assaulting two vulnerable teenage girls. The former actor from Islington preyed on his victims, aged just 14 and 15, during a sleepover in Hertfordshire.

At St Albans Crown Court, Judge Caroline Overington didn’t hold back. She blasted Alford’s “shocking” crimes, saying: “The girls were in what should have been a safe environment. You were a trusted family friend and fully aware of their ages. You showed little remorse and no acknowledgement of your crimes.”

Alongside his jail sentence, Alford was hit with a Sexual Harm Prevention Order, a restraining order, and must remain on the sex offenders’ register for life.

Horrific Details of the Assaults

  • The attacks took place on 9 April 2022 at a sleepover in Hoddesdon.
  • Alford arrived drunk and supplied alcohol to the underage girls.
  • He sexually assaulted one girl twice and another while she was falling asleep on the sofa.

Alford faces serious convictions including penetrative sexual activity and assault by penetration. Though he denied all charges during the trial, the jury found him guilty in September 2025.

Investigation and Trial Timeline

  • The two victims bravely reported Alford to police in April 2022.
  • Hertfordshire’s Sexual Offences Investigation Team (SOIT) launched a detailed probe.
  • Alford was arrested, charged in July 2023, and pleaded not guilty at court.
  • Despite his denials, overwhelming evidence led to his conviction and sentencing today.

This chilling case shows predators can hide in plain sight, even as trusted family friends. The victims now finally have justice — and a chance for protection from further harm.
