Brits Using ‘Dodgy’ Amazon Fire Sticks Face Police Crackdown

Anyone using dodgy Amazon Fire Sticks and similar devices to stream illegal content could soon have the law knocking on their door. These gadgets, plugged into TVs to bypass costly streaming subscriptions like Disney+, Netflix, and Amazon Prime Video, have exploded in popularity—but so have the risks.

FACT steps up raids on illegal streamers

Thanks to the high cost of streaming subscriptions, many Brits turn to these illicit devices and apps to watch live and on-demand entertainment for free. But the Federation Against Copyright Theft (FACT UK) is cracking down hard. They’re sending cease and desist letters and teaming up with police for “Knock and Talks” across the UK and Ireland.

“FACT constantly monitors the digital landscape to combat illegal streaming activities,” a spokesperson said. “We use various methods to identify and target unauthorised businesses offering illegal streams.”

Working closely with Crimestoppers, FACT encourages the public to report illegal streaming. Their Intelligence Unit investigates tips, then follows up with enforcement action — from warning letters to in-person visits alongside law enforcement.

Serious jail time for stream distributors

Under the Fraud Act 2006, those caught illegally obtaining streaming services face up to 12 months in jail. More severe offences can bring up to five years behind bars. While casual viewers usually won’t be prosecuted, distributors can face hefty sentences. In 2018, five men were jailed for up to 11 years each for running illegal streaming operations.
