Two Thugs Jailed After Savage Home Raid in St Leonard’s Park
Two men have been locked up following a brutal break-in at a home in St Leonard’s Park, East Grinstead. The victim, a man in his 30s, was left with horrific injuries after a vicious attack inside his own house.
Fake Car Crash Scam Sparks Brutal Assault
The terrifying ordeal began on the evening of 3 December 2024. A man knocked on the victim’s door, claiming he’d accidentally reversed into his car. When the victim stepped outside to check, three masked thugs stormed inside.
The gang launched a savage assault. Using pliers, they broke the victim’s nose, fractured his cheekbones, smashed his eye sockets, and even snapped a rib. The injuries were so severe he required surgery.
The robbers didn’t stop there. They made off with cash, the victim’s mobile phone, earphones, and car keys.
Doorbell Cam Footage Nails the Crooks
Sussex Police quickly launched a manhunt. Crucial doorbell camera footage showed two suspects lurking around before and after the invasion.
Identified as Steven Webb, 40, and Alan Smith, 21, both from Surrey, they couldn’t escape the evidence. Webb’s car was also seen nearby at the time.
The pair were arrested on 6 January 2025, charged with robbery, pleaded guilty on 22 July, and sentenced the following February.
Heavy Jail Terms and Restraining Orders for Home Invaders
- Steven Webb jailed for 61 months
- Alan Smith locked up for 46 months
- Both handed five-year restraining orders
Grievous bodily harm charges were dropped but remain on file.
“This was a particularly serious attack using deception to get into a home,” said Investigations Supervisor Oli Robinson. “They even tried to smash the doorbell camera with a hammer, but the footage was already saved.”
This shocking case is a chilling reminder of the rising threat of distraction burglaries. It proves doorbell cams aren’t just decoration – they catch criminals red-handed. Stay alert and keep your home secure.
