Medway Man Jailed for 17 Years Over 1970s Child Sex Abuse

A 78-year-old from Medway has been locked up for 17 years for abusing a child nearly 50 years ago. Alan Vinten, from Otterham Quay Lane, Rainham, Gillingham, was found guilty at Maidstone Crown Court of repeatedly attacking a nine-year-old girl during the 1970s.

Historic Abuse Uncovered After Decades

The horrific abuse went on for around a year before being reported to kent.police.uk" target="_blank" rel="noopener" title="Kent Police" data-wpil-keyword-link="linked">Kent Police in November 2021. After a thorough investigation, Vinten was charged under the Sexual Offences Act 1956 for multiple indecent assaults and unlawful intercourse with a child.

Judge Hands Down Heavy Sentence

Despite denying all charges, Vinten was convicted on all eight counts. On April 4, 2025, he was sentenced to 17 years behind bars. He must serve two-thirds of his sentence before parole and will face an additional year on licence after release.

“Vinten is a predatory paedophile who subjected his young and vulnerable victim to the most appalling and terrifying campaign of abuse,” said Detective Constable Laura Bowness, who led the investigation.

“The victim felt she had nowhere to turn but has now found the strength to give evidence and ensure Vinten faces justice.”

“This sentence sends a clear message: it’s never too late to report abuse. Survivors will be believed.”

DC Bowness also highlighted the lasting impact the crimes have had on the survivor’s adult life, but hopes she can now move forward.
