Rape Conviction of Teen Rapper Sean Hogg Overturned in Shocking Court Ruling

Sean Hogg Walks Free After Rape Conviction Quashed

In a jaw-dropping twist, the 22-year-old Sean Hogg’s conviction for raping a 13-year-old girl has been overturned by the Scottish Courts and Tribunals Service. Hogg, who was only 17 when the attacks allegedly happened between March and June 2018 at Midlothian’s 1 Country Park, was initially given a slap on the wrist with a community payback order – no jail time.

Public Outcry Sparks Appeal

The lenient sentence sparked fury across Scotland. Justice campaigners slammed the ruling, calling it too soft, especially for such a serious crime. Scotland’s Lord Advocate, Dorothy Bain KC, stepped in and ordered the Crown Office to appeal. But at the edinburgh/" title="Edinburgh" data-wpil-keyword-link="linked">Edinburgh Court of Criminal Appeal, Hogg’s defence claimed the judge had misdirected the jury over key evidence rules.

Conviction Overturned Due to ‘Insufficient Evidence’

Despite the Crown admitting trial mistakes, Solicitor General Ruth Charteris KC insisted there was enough proof for at least one rape conviction. Yet Judge Lady Dorrian ruled the evidence was “insufficient,” leading to the verdict being scrapped and Hogg’s acquittal. The Crown confirmed no retrial will follow, calling it “not in the public interest.”

Justice System Under Fire as Victim Left Devastated

The decision has sparked fresh outrage, raising serious doubts about how sexual assault cases are handled in Scotland. The victim and her family have endured a gruelling ordeal, with the Crown offering to meet them to provide support. Critics also highlight the ongoing reforms to sentencing laws, moving towards “individualistic” approaches focusing on rehab over punishment – with mixed public reaction.

This case is a stark reminder that justice for sexual assault victims remains a complex, fiercely contested battle.
