Party Horror: Man Jailed 12 Years for Rape After Victim Falls Asleep
Darrell Crookes, 56, from Belvedere Drive, was sentenced to 12 years behind bars for raping a woman at a party in 2021. The victim, who remains anonymous for life, was targeted after falling asleep following the gathering.
Terrifying Attack While Victim Asleep
The court heard how Crookes waited until the party was over and the victim was asleep before launching his sick attack. She woke to him repeatedly making threats before he brutally raped her.
Despite Crookes pleading not guilty to rape and two counts of assault by penetration, a jury found him guilty after the trial. He was sentenced last Friday, September 22.
Investigator Praises Victim’s Bravery
Detective Sergeant Fiona Trussell applauded the victim’s courage and dignity throughout the investigation and court case. She highlighted the severe impact the attack has had on the victim’s life.
“We will tirelessly work to bring offenders to justice. I hope this sentence helps the victim start moving forward,” said Det Sgt Trussell.
South 1 Police emphasised their commitment to taking every rape report seriously and supporting survivors throughout the legal process.
