Essex Police Officer Axed Over Racist and Offensive Comments
An Essex police officer has been sacked for gross misconduct after making discriminatory and offensive remarks. The officer, whose identity remains confidential for legal reasons, was found guilty of breaching multiple professional standards.
Discriminatory Chats and Offensive Images
The hearing, held on Monday 7 June at Chelmsford’s Civic Centre and chaired by legal expert Karimulla Khan, revealed a series of troubling incidents. In October 2019, the officer made racist comments during conversations with colleagues. Then in January 2020, offensive remarks were made during a discussion about American politics. On top of that, an inappropriate image was shared in a WhatsApp group in November 2019.
Dismissed Without Notice
The misconduct panel ruled that the officer breached standards on authority, respect, courtesy, equality, and diversity. After being suspended following complaints from colleagues, the officer was formally dismissed without notice and added to the College of Policing’s Barred List, barring him from joining any other police force.
Essex Police Hits Back
Assistant Chief Constable Andy Prophet slammed the officer’s actions: “The views and actions expressed by this individual officer go against the values of Essex Police, and the police service as a whole.
“Embracing diversity and equality, and treating everyone fairly and with respect, whatever their background, is at the very heart of what we stand for.
“Essex Police is an inclusive organisation and these are values we actively uphold, not just within our force but within our communities.
“We will not tolerate prejudice or hate in any form. This is vital to help us deliver a fair and inclusive service to our communities, and to maintain their trust and confidence in us to keep them safe.”
