Luxury Yacht Smuggling 20 Albanians Across English Channel

This is the first picture of the luxury yacht caught in a daring migrant smuggling bid. The 23ft vessel, named Tacoma BR, was packed with 20 Albanian nationals hidden below deck as it crossed the English Channel.

Border Force Intercepts Yacht Near Newquay

The Tacoma BR, believed to have set sail from Brest, France, was stopped by Border Force officers heading towards Newquay on Sunday. Onboarding, officers found 19 men and one woman concealed below. All are thought to be Albanian and have been detained, pending removal from the UK, confirmed the Home Office.

Smugglers Turn to High-End Yachts

This dramatic bust highlights a worrying trend. Criminal gangs are switching from small boats to luxury vessels to sneak migrants into the UK. The Tacoma BR is reportedly a Beneteau Oceanis Clipper 343, a posh family cruising yacht with two cabins, six berths, and a bathroom. Used models sell for £50,000 to £80,000 online.

Three Men Face Legal Heat

  • Bleda Bega, 44, an Albanian national, has been charged with facilitating illegal entry and remanded in custody. He awaits trial at Truro Crown Court on May 13.
  • Florjand Lika (30) and Romeo Zani (32), also Albanian, breached deportation orders. They pled guilty at Bodmin Magistrates’ Court on April 15 and face sentencing at Truro Crown Court next month.

Home Office Sounds the Alarm

“This case shows that while small boat crossings remain under close scrutiny, criminal gangs are adapting their methods, using pleasure crafts and other deceptive means to try and evade detection. We remain committed to stopping illegal migration and bringing to justice those who profit from human smuggling.” – Home Office spokesperson

Rising Tide of Channel Crossings

No small boat crossings were recorded on April 13, but a record-breaking 11 vessel crossings carrying 656 people were reported just a day earlier – the highest single-day total this year.

The Tacoma BR incident was not counted in Sunday’s stats, suggesting some smuggling via luxury yachts or other craft may slip official tracking. The National Crime Agency is probing links between UK gangs and organised crime groups running illegal sea routes.
