Kent Police crack down after teen theft spree in Canterbury city centre
48-Hour Dispersal Order Launched
Kent Police slapped a 48-hour dispersal order on Canterbury city centre on Wednesday 27 March 2024. The move came after reports of teenagers targeting other teens for theft in Dane John Gardens and near the city walls on Monday 25 and Tuesday 26 March.
Suspects Arrested But Released on Bail
Four boys and one girl, aged 14 to 16, were arrested on suspicion of robbery on Wednesday 27 March in connection to the incidents. All five have been bailed pending further investigations as police continue to probe the matter.
Extra Patrols and Zero Tolerance Measures
- High-visibility officers are patrolling the area around the clock.
- A dispersal order remains active until 3pm Friday 29 March, empowering officers to break up groups and arrest those who refuse to comply.
- Three additional individuals were stopped and searched on Wednesday, with two receiving community resolutions for cannabis possession.
- The force is urging residents to report any anti-social behaviour to help keep the city safe.
Police Urge Public to Come Forward
Inspector Paul Stoner of Canterbury’s Community Safety Unit said: “We don’t want to stop anyone enjoying our wonderful city. However, when offences are reported it is right we take robust action and ensure the public—especially children going to and from school—feel safe.”
