Ex-Footballer Jailed for Brutal Attack on Toddler
Former pro footballer Kiernan Hughes-Mason, 32, was found guilty of violently assaulting a two-year-old girl in a shocking case that has rocked Essex. The toddler suffered horrific injuries and now needs round-the-clock care after the savage attack in Westcliff-on-Sea back in January 2020.
Gruesome Injuries Shock Court
The court heard the little girl was left with 17 injuries across her face, chest, back, and legs — injuries so severe a doctor said they resembled those from a “high-speed road traffic accident” or a “fall from a substantial height.” Experts said the wounds came from violent shaking and being slammed against hard surfaces, contradicting Hughes-Mason’s claim the child fell on a dollhouse.
The toddler was rushed to Southend Hospital and later transferred to Great Ormond Street, where she spent 14 days in a coma. The attack caused permanent brain damage.
Damning Texts Reveal Dark Mindset
Text messages uncovered during the trial exposed Hughes-Mason’s growing frustration while caring for the child. In one message to his then-partner, he wrote, “She’s actually getting on my nerves” and “I’m gonna hit her.” He was arrested on 14 February 2020.
Football Past and Fallout
Hughes-Mason began his career at Championship side Millwall and later played for clubs including Welling United and Leatherhead. Most recently, he managed Enfield Borough — a role he lost after his conviction. Enfield said they had no idea about his serious legal troubles when they hired him.
Hashtag United, where Hughes-Mason served as reserve team manager and player, condemned the assault as “frankly sickening.”
“We finally have a verdict, and that man is now held accountable for what he did to our little girl. We have had to go through what no family should ever have to experience, and our girl is going to bear the consequences for the rest of her life,” the victim’s family said.
Hughes-Mason is set to be sentenced on 10 September at Basildon Crown Court.
