Garda Peeping Tom Jailed for Six Months Over Horrific Harassment of Female Colleagues
Garda Caught Squinting into Women’s Changing Room
In a jaw-dropping case straight out of a nightmare, Garda Mícheal Mannion, 41, from Toorena, Renvyle, Co Galway, was sentenced to six months behind bars for harassing two female colleagues at Clifden Garda Station. Mannion’s twisted behaviour involved repeatedly peeping through the window of the women’s changing room from August to November 2019. The court heard damning evidence of his relentless stalking and invasion of privacy.
Judge Slams “Deviant, Deeply Degrading” Conduct
At Galway District Court, Judge Marie Keane didn’t hold back. She branded Mannion’s actions as “deviant, deeply degrading, and humiliating,” highlighting the severe psychological trauma suffered by the victims. One victim said the ordeal was a “complete invasion of privacy” and “personal attack” that wrecked her mental and physical health. The other described endless panic attacks, sleepless nights, anxiety, and plummeting self-esteem that impacted not just her but her family too.
Shock CCTV Footage and Victim Impact Statements
- Court videos showed Mannion climbing an outdoor railing six times to peer in.
- Victims described the Garda’s conduct as “callous and devious.”
- Psychological damage and loss of income were highlighted as lasting fallout.
Apology Falls Flat—Judge Demands Jail Time
Despite Mannion’s offer to donate €5,000 to a women’s charity, Judge Keane ruled this “inappropriate” given the severity of the offence. Mannion remains free on bail pending appeal but has been suspended since the probe began. His barrister cited psychological reports suggesting Mannion narrowly missed a “voyeuristic disorder” diagnosis but suffered internal struggles driving his behaviour.
“This is a wake-up call for law enforcement,” the judge said, insisting the sentence sends a strong message on accountability. Mannion’s fall from a previously unblemished career stands as a stark warning: no one is above the law when it comes to harassment.
