Black Friday Bargains: Beware Before Buying That E-Scooter
With Black Friday deals flying in, everyone’s hunting for a bargain. But hold your horses before splashing out on an e-scooter – it’s not as simple as it seems.
The E-Scooter Craze Hits a Roadblock
E-scooters have zoomed in popularity as fun gifts for teens. But here’s the catch: privately owned e-scooters are illegal on UK roads and pavements. Their only legal playground? Private land, with the owner’s permission.
Sure, you can try out trial e-scooters at select sites across the county without legal drama. But off those tracks, you’re playing with fire.
Essex Police Warn Against Christmas E-Scooter Gifts
Samantha Wright, Road Crime Operational Manager for Essex Police, says: “Christmas is marked by giving gifts, but we’d ask you to think again before buying an e-scooter. It’s our job to keep all road users safe. They’re not a toy and we need people to understand the legal implications of using one on a road or pavement. We don’t want anyone to be disappointed on Christmas morning when they find out that they can’t test-ride it for the first time. Or even worse, it’s seized because road use is illegal.”
Think Twice Before You Buy
- E-scooters can’t legally be used on public roads or sidewalks.
- Only private land use is allowed — with permission.
- Trial schemes exist, but they’re limited and controlled.
So before clicking ‘buy now’ this Black Friday, remember: that seemingly perfect gift could end up grounded or confiscated come Christmas Day.
