Green Light for Massive New Leisure Centre in Eastleigh
Eastleigh has just given the thumbs up to one of the biggest local leisure projects yet! On Wednesday 16 March, councillors gave the final nod to kickstart work on the brand-new Fleming Park Leisure Centre.
Interserve Secures Big Contract for Eastleigh’s Sport Hub
Eastleigh Borough Council’s Cabinet appointed Interserve, a global construction firm with a local Hampshire office in Nursling, as the main contractor. The centre’s sleek new design comes courtesy of AHR architects. Since being named preferred builder, Interserve has been hammering out detailed plans, timelines, and budgets ahead of work due to begin by the end of April.
Interserve is known for partnering with local firms, boosting the Eastleigh economy, and they are already working on Birmingham University’s £40 million swimming pool and leisure complex.
What to Expect at the New Fleming Park Leisure Centre
- An expanded main pool with eight swimming lanes, up from six
- A bigger teaching pool for lessons and beginners
- Upgraded gym facilities to pump up your workouts
- A 15-court sports hall for all kinds of action
- An improved café serving up refreshments
- Free car parking retained for easy access
The new centre will fit next to the existing building without eating into any green space. Inside, smarter design means more room for all the top-notch facilities.
Zero Cost to Council Tax Payers – How Will It Be Funded?
The project is estimated to cost £25 million — but here’s the kicker: it won’t cost you a penny extra in council tax. Funding includes a £2 million grant from Sport England, £90,000 from Netball England, and the rest covered by Eastleigh Borough Council.
Management is locked down for 20 more years too, with Places for People Leisure continuing to run the new centre. The revenue from day-to-day running fees will cover ongoing costs, ensuring a smooth operation without hitting taxpayers.
“We’ve been working with our partners to finalise plans and deliver a state-of-the-art leisure centre that offers excellent value, top design, strong environmental standards, and zero cost to council tax payers,” said Eastleigh Borough Council Leader, Councillor Keith House.
