£31,000 Worth of Illegal Cigarettes and Vapes Seized in Plumstead Raids
Joint Police and Council Crackdown Hits Illegal Tobacco Trade
Greenwich Council and the Metropolitan Police swooped on two Plumstead shops in a dramatic bust that led to the confiscation of thousands of pounds’ worth of illegal cigarettes, tobacco, and vapes.
The first raid on April 26 saw officers execute a search warrant at a local shop. Police spotted a suspect desperately trying to ditch illegal products by throwing them through a neighbour’s window before making a dash.
Illegal Goods Dumped, Then Discovered Worth £15,000
Upon inspection, the discarded items turned out to be illegal cigarettes and vapes, all swiftly seized by police. Officers also uncovered several bags stuffed with illegal tobacco and cigarettes in a nearby flat, with a street value estimated at a hefty £15,000.
Second Raid Nets Another £16,000 in Illegal Stock
Two days later, on April 28, further searches uncovered 1,500 packets of illegal cigarettes plus a large haul of illicit vapes. The combined haul from both raids is valued at around £31,000.
The shop owners are now facing court for possession and distribution of illegal tobacco and vape products.
Health Risks and Community Appeal
A Greenwich Council spokesperson warned of the serious health dangers linked to these illegal products. “Selling illegal tobacco products and vapes could have a detrimental effect on our residents’ health, not to mention damaging the reputation of other local businesses,” they said.
Residents are urged to stay vigilant and report any suspected illegal sales anonymously to 1 Trading Standards or the National Consumer Helpline.
This joint effort shows Greenwich Council and the Met Police’s dedication to cracking down on crime and making the community safer and healthier for all.
