Brutal Attacker Jailed for Over Four Years
Bernard Cowley, 37, from Tyrells Way, Sutton Courtney, Abingdon, was locked up for four years and three months after pleading guilty to three counts of actual bodily harm at Oxford Crown Court on Tuesday, 26 February.
Repeated Attacks on Woman
Cowley’s vicious assaults targeted the same woman on three separate occasions at a property in Tyrells Way. The attacks happened on 4 November 2017, 10 May 2018, and 3 November 2018.
- The victim suffered cuts, a black eye, a broken nose, bruising across her body, and marks around her throat.
- She needed hospital treatment but has since been discharged.
Swift Justice After Arrest
Cowley was arrested on 11 November 2018 and charged 11 days later. The court heard how the assaults caused serious physical and psychological harm.

“The victim was subjected to sustained and frenzied attacks by Cowley,” said Detective Constable Martin Whaley from the Domestic Abuse Investigation Unit. “The lasting impact can’t be overstated—these crimes leave lasting physical and psychological scars.
I thank the victim for her bravery and support throughout this case. I’m glad Cowley will now spend time behind bars. Hopefully, this helps the victim start to move on.”
