Paedophile Jailed for Decade-Long Abuse of Girl in the 80s and 90s
A monstrous paedophile who raped and sexually assaulted a young girl for nearly ten years has finally been locked up. Adrian Morbey, 72, was jailed at Snaresbrook Crown Court on Wednesday, 27 November, after a relentless Met Police investigation.
Decades-Old Abuse Revealed
Morbey, from Romford, was sentenced to 15 years in prison, plus an extra year’s licence. He’ll stay on the sex offenders’ register for life. He was found guilty on 21 August of multiple offences including four counts of indecent assault, two counts of indecency, and one count of rape, all involving a child under 16.
The horrific crimes took place from 1989 to 1996 when the victim was between seven and 15 years old. The court heard that Morbey began grooming the girl by intercepting her journey from school, taking her to various locations. What started as sexual assault soon escalated to rape. Morbey even tried to win her over with lavish gifts and money.
Brave Victim Speaks Out After Nearly 30 Years
It wasn’t until 2018 that the victim’s mother came forward to police with suspicions. Following this, the victim courageously disclosed the full extent of the abuse. When questioned by detectives, Morbey flatly denied everything, saying, “Nah, not a chance.” He later claimed, “I never behaved inappropriately with her at all” and expressed shock at the allegations.
Determined officers collected strong evidence, including two detailed video interviews from the victim and statements from people close to her. This painstaking work helped build a watertight case for the Crown Prosecution Service.
Detectives Praise Victim’s Courage and Police Tenacity
Detective Sergeant Charlie Yexley said: “I would like to commend the victim for her bravery in reporting Morbey and reliving her nightmare in detailed interviews. It was painful for her, but her courage helped put this predator behind bars.
I also want to praise DC Jessica Stephens, whose tireless work over many months was crucial in getting Morbey prosecuted. Sexual assault cases – especially ones dating back over 30 years – are never straightforward, but justice has now been served.
This case shows the Met’s commitment to tackling violence against women and girls. We will investigate every allegation of sexual assault, no matter how long ago it happened.”
The sentence brings some relief to the victim, but the scars of Morbey’s horrific crimes linger. The Met Police vow to continue their fight to protect vulnerable victims and hold offenders accountable.
