Private Maths Tutor Jailed for Abusing Vulnerable Teen

Holly Rouse-Sweeney, 37, has been sentenced to six years behind bars for sexually abusing a vulnerable teenage boy she tutored online. The shocking abuse happened after she invited the boy to her former Nottinghamshire home.

Multiple Encounters Despite Knowing Victim’s Age

Rouse-Sweeney had several sexual encounters with the boy, fully aware he was under the age of consent. Police were alerted in May 2023 when the boy’s mother found inappropriate WhatsApp messages on his phone.

Following her arrest, officers discovered Rouse-Sweeney’s laptop containing diary entries that detailed her abuse and confirmed the boy’s true age.

Guilty Pleas and Tough Court Orders

She pleaded guilty to two counts of engaging in non-penetrative sexual activity with a boy and four counts of causing a boy to engage in sexual activity. Nottingham Crown Court handed her a six-year jail term.

Rouse-Sweeney, of Hebden Bridge, was also placed on the sex offenders’ register and slapped with a Sexual Harm Prevention Order limiting her activities on release. A restraining order forbids any future contact with her victim.

Detective Condemns ‘Appalling Breach of Trust’

“This was an appalling breach of trust by a woman who had been trusted to spend time with a vulnerable child,” said Detective Constable Keeley Bringhurst, a child abuse specialist at Nottinghamshire Police. “Instead of teaching him mathematics, she cynically took advantage of him for her own sexual gratification.” “I know this abuse has had a significant impact on the victim and his family, and I hope they will be comforted by this very strong sentence.”

Rouse-Sweeney claimed a longstanding mental health condition influenced her actions, but the court showed little leniency.
