Hit-and-Run Horror on A2: Driver Leaves Victims in Chaos
An Audi driver’s reckless lane change on the A2 in Gravesend caused a brutal crash, leaving several people injured. The culprit sped off, abandoning the wreck and his victims.
Dangerous Driving Sparks Multi-Car Smash
Matthew Sparkes, behind the wheel of an Audi S3 Quattro, suddenly swerved from the outside to the inside lane, smashing into the rear of a Ford Fiesta. The Fiesta spun wildly across the road, crashing into another vehicle. Sparkes kept driving for 500 metres before slamming into a barrier — but made no attempt to help anyone involved.
Three women in the Fiesta suffered injuries and were rushed to hospital. One woman’s injuries were so severe they are life-changing, requiring ongoing medical care.
Justice Served: Driver Jailed and Banned
Sparkes, 35, of Eskdale Road, Bexleyheath, later pleaded guilty at Woolwich Crown Court to dangerous driving and driving without insurance.
- He was sentenced to three years and 11 months behind bars, including activating a suspended sentence.
- On release, he faces a driving ban for seven years and 10 months.
- He must also pass an extended driving test before getting back on the road.
Police Slam Reckless Driver
PC Lee Berridge of Kent Police’s Serious Collision Investigation Unit blasted Sparkes’ “reckless disregard” for road safety. He thanked the victims for helping secure the conviction.
This shocking incident is a stark reminder: dangerous driving will not be tolerated — and justice will be served to those who put lives at risk.
