Selfie Slip-Up Brings Down Notorious Drug Kingpin
A flashy selfie wearing a mud mask led cops straight to Gary Burden, a major player in Liverpool’s drug scene. While he once enjoyed luxury spa days, the 13-year jail sentence he’s now facing guarantees no more pampering behind bars.
Snared at Liverpool Airport in International Sting
Gary Burden was arrested on September 18, 2025, at Liverpool Airport during Operation Venetic, a worldwide crackdown targeting criminals using the encrypted messenger Encrochat to evade police.
Under the alias ‘gravedill’, Burden communicated with his crew using nicknames like Gary/Gaz B, GB, Burden, and Gaz speak.
Digital Slip-Ups and Selfie Proof
Burden’s careless messaging gave detectives all they needed. He revealed family details, sent birthday greetings in May 2020, hinted about his car – and crucially, shared selfies in a muddy face mask and chilling in bed. These personal snaps connected him directly to the drug ring.
The evidence was overwhelming. Burden confessed to conspiracy to supply a colossal 12kg of cocaine, 24kg of heroin, and 72kg of cannabis while laundering the dirty cash from January to June 2020.
Locked Up for Over a Decade: 13 Years 4 Months Behind Bars
On January 30, Burden was slammed with a 13-year-and-4-month sentence. Police declared, “Burden thought he was above the law, but our detailed investigation brought him down.”
The mud mask selfie, once a harmless indulgence, turned out to be the snapshot that sealed his fate. The once-flashy kingpin now faces years away from luxury living – trapped behind bars.
