Cop Sacked After Chasing Vulnerable Woman Who Called for Help

PC Christopher Caley has been kicked out of the police force with immediate effect following a gross misconduct hearing that wrapped up on 17 November.

Abused Trust for Personal Gain

The damning decision came after an independent IOPC probe into allegations dating back to 2019. PC Caley was suspended as soon as the investigation began.

Caley faced serious accusations of breaking multiple police codes — including respecting authority, confidentiality, orders, and general misconduct. The case centered on an incident where police were called to help a woman worried about her ex-partner showing up at her workplace.

While on duty, Caley got hold of the woman’s phone number. Instead of keeping it professional, he immediately started messaging her, pursuing a personal relationship. Despite her polite refusals, he kept at it for two whole months.

Gross Misconduct and Immediate Dismissal

The panel slammed Caley’s behaviour as “gross misconduct.” They agreed he abused the trust placed in police officers, exploiting a vulnerable woman who had called for help. Using confidential information for his own ends was a massive breach of duty.

His actions, the panel concluded, risked damaging public confidence in the police service.

Caley admitted all allegations. As a result, he was dismissed without notice. Plus, his name has been added to the College of Policing Barred List, banning him from any future policing work.

T/Deputy Chief Constable Jim Nye hit out: “Such conduct fell well below the standards expected from officers and staff.”

“This dismissal was necessary to uphold the high standards we expect in Devon and Cornwall Police. This also sends out a clear message that such behaviour will not be tolerated, and action will be taken if officers or staff fall below our standards.”
