Shoplifter Nicked Again After Racking Up £6,000 Theft Spree
A notorious thief who swiped over £6,000 worth of goods from a Greenwich BP petrol station has been slapped with extra jail time. John Harris Bolton, 38, repeatedly raided the shop over six months, pinching meat, booze, and other items.
Persistence Pays Off – but for the Police
Bolton was first arrested on February 4 but kept chancing his luck despite bail conditions. He was caught again on March 13 and eventually pleaded guilty to 31 counts of theft. In April, he scooped a 35-week jail term along with a five-year ban from all BP stores in southeast London.
But his spree didn’t end there. On July 8, Bolton appeared at Bromley Magistrates’ Court, where he admitted to eight more thefts from the same BP outlet. The judge ordered an extra two weeks behind bars.
Police and Business Teams Join Forces
Superintendent Rav Pathania, leading local policing in Greenwich, said: “Bolton stole a huge amount of goods, and I’m pleased he’s paid the price for his crimes. We know the damaging effect shoplifting has on businesses, especially the awful impact on workers who feel threatened by those who target their workplace.”
BP UK security boss Jim Brand added: “The safety and security of our valued colleagues and customers always comes first. This case shows how working together can tackle rising crime and abuse in retail – sending a clear message that crime has no place in our stores.”
Michael Walters, Area Manager of Safer Business Network, praised the crackdown, saying: “This is a perfect example of how intelligence sharing and collaborative efforts can lead to positive action and protect businesses.”
Final Word
John Harris Bolton’s shoplifting saga highlights the persistent threat retail crime poses. Thanks to a tight police-business crackdown, this repeat offender is finally facing the consequences he deserves.
