Dover and Deal Bars Armed with Knife-Detecting Wands
In a bold crackdown on knife crime, officers from Dover’s Community Safety Unit teamed up with Dover District Council licensing chiefs to deliver knife-detecting wands to 10 venues across Dover and Deal last October.
The simple but effective devices are now in the hands of bar and pub staff, helping them stop anyone trying to sneak in dangerous weapons.
Zero Tolerance on Weapons in Kent
PC Dannii Rolfe from Dover’s Community Safety Unit made it clear: “There is no excuse for carrying a weapon of any kind in Kent and we will seek the prosecution of anyone who does so.”
She added: “We’re very pleased with the response from staff in bars and pubs in Dover and Deal. Their support alongside partner agencies is vital in tackling this issue.”
Community Funding Backs Safer Nights Out
The Knife Wand Initiative was funded by the Dover Community Safety Partnership, with cash from the Violence Reduction Unit (VRU).
Cllr Nigel Collor, Chair of the Community Safety Partnership, said: “We’re determined to tackle the scourge of knife crime as part of our work with Kent Police and partners. While knife crime levels in our district remain low, this initiative shows how we’re helping local venues keep people safe.”
Matthew Scott, Kent’s Police and Crime Commissioner overseeing the VRU, added: “The VRU brings agencies together to prevent crime and protect the public. I’m pleased Government funding is supporting projects making a real difference in our communities.”
