Chaos at Highdown Jail After Prisoner Sets Cell on Fire
Five fire engines from Surrey and the London Fire Brigade, along with an ambulance, rushed to HM Prison Highdown after a shocking blaze broke out on Wednesday night.
Prisoner Sets Self and Cell Ablaze
The Category B men’s prison, located on the outskirts of Banstead in Surrey, was thrown into chaos when a prisoner deliberately set his cell and himself on fire at around 9.10pm.
Brave Officers Quell Blaze Before Firefighters Arrive
Despite the alarming scene, prison officers managed to extinguish the fire before firefighters got there. Fire crews and paramedics still stayed on site for safety.
Victim Treated for Smoke Inhalation and Burns
The inmate received emergency treatment with oxygen for smoke inhalation and burns. An ambulance crew attended to injuries before transporting him for further care.
The Prison Service has been contacted for a comment on the incident.
