Leeds Riots: Two Men Jail Sentenced After Brutal Street Brawl

Two men caught in a violent street fight during recent riots in Leeds city centre have been slammed with prison sentences. Judge Guy Kearl KC handed down tough punishments amid a clampdown on public disorder and rising tensions.

Sameer Ali Gets 20 Months for Brutal Assaults

Sameer Ali, 21, received 20 months behind bars for affray. The judge didn’t hold back, telling Ali: “You played a leading role in a group activity. A large number of people were affected.” Court heard Ali landed multiple full-force punches, including on a victim already restrained by others. The assault wasn’t a one-off attack — it was a sustained onslaught.

Adnan Ghafoor Jailed for 2½ Years, Including Sentence Breach

Adnan Ghafoor, 31, was locked up for two-and-a-half years for affray — which included a 12-month term for breaking a suspended sentence. Judge Kearl said Ghafoor “acted in concert with others”, bearing joint responsibility, though his role was slightly smaller.

Violence Erupts in Shocking 30-Second Rampage

The court revealed the clash lasted only 30 seconds but erupted with punches, kicks, and even a thrown missile. Witnesses were left shocked, fearful, and distressed by the riotous scenes.

The law applies to everyone, no matter what colour, race, religion or political persuasion; there is no distinction,” said Judge Kearl. He condemned the defendants’ use of unlawful violence and stressed the need to uphold the rule of law.

The punishments send a stark warning to anyone tempted to stir trouble on the streets. With public safety at risk, courts are cracking down hard on violent offenders amid civil unrest.

This sentencing is part of a wider judicial push to get a grip on the recent spike in disorder and make clear: violent behaviour will not be tolerated.
