Nottingham Man Gets Nearly Four Years in Prison in UK’s Biggest Jail Smuggling Bust
William Francis, 57, from Nottingham, has been sentenced to three years and 11 months in prison. He is the 17th convict in South Yorkshire Police’s massive crackdown on the UK’s largest drug and weapon smuggling ring into prisons. The total prison time handed to all defendants now exceeds a staggering 88 years.
Drugs, Knives, and Phones Worth Over £1 Million Smuggled into HMP Lindholme
The court heard how Amy Hatfield, 38, a mental health nursing assistant, worked with Francis and others to sneak drugs, knives, and mobile phones into HMP Lindholme in Doncaster. When arrested arriving for work in October 2019, Hatfield was caught with a cocktail of illegal items, including MDMA, ketamine, spice paper, steroids, testosterone vials, and several phones.
Shockingly, she was found carrying four Ribena bottles filled with about two litres of liquid spice. Authorities valued the haul at over £1 million.
Financial Links Expose William Francis in Prison Smuggling Conspiracy
Francis was already under suspicion for bringing Class A and B drugs into Lindholme in 2019. The Prison Anti-Corruption Unit connected him to the gang through financial trails. After interviews, he admitted to possession and intent to supply both Class A and B drugs, plus conspiracy to smuggle drugs into prison.
Detective Hits Out at Prison Smuggling’s Deadly Toll
“This four-year investigation laid bare a criminal network ruining lives inside and outside prison walls,” said Detective Sergeant Gareth Gent, head of the Prison Anti-Corruption Unit. “Smuggling drugs and weapons brings violence, misery, and tragic loss of life.”
Police vow to keep tackling prison smuggling with prison service partners, aiming to root out those exploiting the system and make sure justice is served.
Sentencing Wrap-Up: Over 88 Years Behind Bars for Smuggling Ringleaders
William Francis was sentenced at Bradford Crown Court. Overall, 17 defendants received a combined 88 years and 11 months in prison. Three others got suspended sentences totalling almost five years. The crackdown marks a major win against prison corruption and contraband smuggling in the UK.
