Teen Jailed for Brutal Attack at Birley Academy
A 17-year-old has been slapped with a massive 10-year extended sentence after a vicious assault at Birley Academy in Sheffield earlier this year. Louis Melotte will spend five years behind bars in a young offenders’ institution, followed by a five-year extended licence.
Violent School Attack Caught on CCTV
The shocking attack took place in the school’s reception area and was caught on CCTV. The footage shows Melotte sneaking onto school grounds with a shard of glass hidden up his sleeve before launching his terrifying assault on three victims, including a 12-year-old pupil.
Two heroic staff members—youth and integration coordinator Molly Bulmer and receptionist Alicia Richards—jumped into action to stop the rampage. Their quick thinking prevented what could have been a far worse disaster.
Bravery in the Face of Danger
“The fact that I managed to escape without at least life-changing injuries is baffling to me. It is clear to me, as proven by his actions, that he is a very dangerous person. I feel very fortunate to be alive,” said Alicia Richards in her victim impact statement.
Guilty of Multiple Charges
Melotte, from Jaunty Avenue, Sheffield, was convicted of three counts of attempting to cause grievous bodily harm. He had already pleaded guilty to two counts of wounding with intent and possession of a sharply pointed article on school premises.
Before the attack, he posted chilling messages on social media warning “today is the day,” signaling his intent. Following his conviction earlier this month, a judge lifted the order protecting his identity.
Police Praise Heroic Staff and Swift Justice
Detective Constable Thomas Ryan of South Yorkshire Police’s Major Crime Unit praised Bulmer and Richards for their bravery, revealing plans to nominate them for bravery awards. He also thanked Birley Academy for their full cooperation.
Melotte was arrested within minutes of the attack following swift police action. DC Ryan hopes the sentencing offers some closure to victims and the school community.
