Brothers Found Guilty of Brutal Manslaughter in Rotherham
After a three-week trial at Sheffield Crown Court, brothers Gareth Leach, 28, and Kyle Martin, 22, were convicted of manslaughter for the savage attack on Dean Williamson from Rotherham.
Deadly Dispute Over Mobility Scooter
The violent assault unfolded at around 1pm on Tuesday 5 October 2021, sparked by a clash over their mother’s mobility scooter just six days earlier. The brothers launched an attack on Dean at his home in Williams Street, Parkgate, leaving him with severe facial and chest injuries.
Despite being rushed to hospital, Dean’s condition worsened rapidly and he tragically died that same afternoon.
Mother’s Lies Caught Out
Sara Martin, 50, the brothers’ mother from Greasbrough, tried to cover up her son Gareth’s role. She gave police false statements claiming Gareth only tried to stop the attack and was terrified by Kyle’s actions. She later pleaded guilty to perverting the course of justice in 2022.
“Leach and Martin’s actions that day were evil and twisted,” said Detective Chief Inspector Simon Palmer. “Today’s sentencing will not bring Dean back, but I hope it brings closure to his family and friends.”
Sentences Handed Down
- Gareth Leach received nine years for manslaughter plus two years for perverting the course of justice, to run concurrently.
- Kyle Martin was jailed for nine years for manslaughter.
- Sara Martin was handed a 14-month prison sentence suspended for two years for perverting the course of justice.
