Two Oldham Men Jailed for Brutal Murder of Ali Asghar
Two thugs have been locked up for the savage murder of 39-year-old Ali Asghar following a tense nine-day trial at Manchester Crown Court.
Connor McPartland and Martin Treacy Sent Down
- Connor McPartland, from Hollins Road, Oldham, was handed a hefty 14 years and 6 months for murder.
- Martin Treacy, of Gawsworth Close, Oldham, received 13 years and 6 months behind bars after being found guilty of the same charge.
Deadly Confrontation During Uber Ride
The shocking attack unfolded in the early hours of 30 October 2021. Treacy and McPartland ordered an Uber from Oldham town centre, aiming to get dropped at a spot in Rochdale.
During the journey, taxi driver and victim Ali Asghar asked the pair to stop munching on their takeaway and pointed out they’d selected the wrong drop-off location on the Uber app. This sparked their foul temper.
The driver stopped on Queensway near the Shell petrol station. Asghar got out along with the two men, who immediately turned violent.
Violent Assault Witnessed by Bystanders
One witness heard the men shouting aggressively at Ali. Another taxi driver saw both defendants batter Ali to the floor, then kick him forcefully in the head.
The brave witness tried to intervene but was threatened. The attackers fled, leaving Ali badly beaten on the pavement. Police were quickly called and the two were caught shortly after, guided by the helpful taxi driver.
Family Pays Tribute
“In loving memory of Ali Asghar who has left us all at a very young age, so tragically.
A loving and devoted son, brother and friend who will be forever missed.
On behalf of his family, we want to express our deepest thanks to the police, barristers, judge, jury and everyone who helped bring justice for Ali.
A huge heartfelt thank you to all.”
Investigator Praises Taxi Driver’s Bravery
Senior Investigating Officer Phil Reade from GMP’s Public Protection and Serious Crime Division slammed the killers’ vicious attack.
“The senseless actions of Treacy and McPartland that morning were utterly despicable and led to a family losing a much loved son and brother.
These two men are clearly violent individuals and I am relieved they are off our streets to reflect on their terrible deeds and the pain they caused.”
“The judge highly commended the taxi driver for his bravery in trying to save Ali’s life, and we thank him wholeheartedly.”
