A trusted volunteer has rocked Wiltshire’s arts scene by stealing over £56,000 from Devizes’ beloved Wharf Theatre.
Ex-Treasurer Carol Rendell Stole £56K from Wharf Theatre
Carol Rendell, a volunteer treasurer from Melksham, abused her position to siphon a whopping £56,441.70 from the theatre’s funds. The theft spanned from May 2019 to February 2024. Rendell funneled the cash into her and her husband’s accounts, then tried to cover it up with fake financial records.
She faced Salisbury Crown Court on January 30 and was slapped with a two-year prison sentence, suspended for two years. Plus, she must complete up to 12 days of Rehabilitation Activity Requirements.
Theatre Community Left Devastated by Betrayal
“The Wharf Theatre is not just a place of work, but a community run by volunteers. We share a common passion for the Arts and for creating a welcoming environment for all who walk through our doors. The effects of this will continue to be felt for a long time to come.”
The theatre blasted the theft as a “considerable financial blow” that has thrown them into turmoil. Planned repairs are on hold, and future projects are frozen. The theatre struggles to rebuild reserves, putting its future and that of local artists at risk.
What hurts most is the betrayal. Rendell was once trusted and respected. Her actions have shattered the friendships and trust that kept the theatre’s volunteer spirit alive.
Police Praise Brave Volunteers Who Spoke Out
Detective Shonna O’Harney said, “The Wharf Theatre is a valued asset to the East Wiltshire community, depending on community generosity to survive. Rendell’s actions have caused deep and widespread harm.
“I want to thank the volunteers at the Wharf Theatre for reporting this offence. We know the community will take time to heal.”
