Police swarmed a student accommodation building on Stanhope Road, Portsmouth, yesterday after a suspicious object was reported at 4:18pm. Emergency crews quickly set up a cordon and evacuated the building.

Controlled blast in Victoria Park

The Explosive Ordnance Disposal team was called in and carried out a controlled explosion safely away from the block, in nearby Victoria Park. Thankfully, no injuries were reported.

Students safe as cordon lifted

Once the threat was neutralised, students were allowed back into the building and the cordon was removed. The evacuation was carried out as a precaution, with support from Hampshire Police, South Central Ambulance Service, Hampshire Fire and Rescue, Portsmouth City Council, the University of Portsmouth, and The Student Housing Company.

Arrest made as investigation continues

A 20-year-old man has been arrested in connection with the incident and is currently in police custody. Authorities say there is no ongoing threat to the public as they continue their enquiries.
