Man Shot Dead by Armed Police in Southwark After Crossbow Threat
A man believed to be armed with a crossbow was shot dead by armed police this morning in Southwark, London. The man, reportedly in his 30s, was trying to force his way into a property on Bywater Place and threatened the residents inside.
Armed Police Respond to Threat
Local officers first arrived and attempted to talk the man down. When he continued to pose a danger, armed police were called in and quickly got to the scene. The suspect had already entered the property by then, leading to a police firearm being discharged.
Fatal Outcome Despite First Aid
Emergency crews from the ambulance service rushed in to give first aid. Sadly, the man died at the scene. Police are now working to inform his next of kin. Two occupants inside the property suffered minor injuries during the incident.
Investigation Underway, Police Offer Condolences
“My thoughts are with all those affected by this incident,” said Detective Chief Superintendent Seb Adjei-Addoh, head of Southwark policing. “We understand the local community will be concerned by this morning’s events. We will fully support the Independent Office for Police Conduct’s investigation into what happened.”
Armed officers in London are highly trained and rarely discharge their weapons. The Metropolitan Police’s Directorate of Professional Standards has been notified. The Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC) has launched a full inquiry into the shooting to uncover the full circumstances.
