French Coastguard Accused of Ramming Migrant Boat in English Channel Drama

Chaos erupted early Monday near Gravelines Beach when a French border guard speedboat allegedly tried to ram an inflatable dinghy packed with migrants just 100 feet from the French coast. The migrant vessel had only just begun its dangerous journey toward Calais and the UK.

Chase and Collision: Migrants Flee French Authorities

At around 7:30 AM, a French patrol spotted the black dinghy crowded with migrants. The border guards flashed blue and red lights and ordered the boat to turn back. But the migrants pressed on, triggering a high-speed pursuit.

Eyewitnesses said the French speedboat appeared to deliberately ram the dinghy in a shocking escalation. Soon after, a French naval ship and the coastguard rescue vessel Ridens joined the operation, attempting to steer the migrants back to Calais port.

Migrant Crossings Soar as UK Faces Growing Border Crisis

This incident lays bare the grim reality facing migrants risking Channel crossings. More than 19,000 have made the perilous trip this year. Since the Labour Government under Sir Keir Starmer took office, 5,500 migrants have arrived, with over 450 landing in nine boats on Saturday alone.

The surge is piling pressure on UK and French authorities scrambling to tackle the crisis. Home Secretary Yvette Cooper has unveiled a new Border Security Command aimed at smashing criminal smuggling gangs and tightening border control.

Starmer Vows to “Smash the Gangs” Behind Channel Crossings

“This command will lead on smashing the gangs… police and prosecutors across borders gathering evidence and intelligence, sharing data, and having an arrest strategy,” Starmer declared at last month’s NATO summit in Washington.

New powers under the Counter-Terrorism Act allow officers to conduct stop-and-search at the border, execute financial probes, and issue warrants to crack down on organised crime linked to illegal crossings.

A Home Office spokesperson said: “The new Government is taking steps to boost our border security, setting up a new Border Security Command… to smash the criminal smuggling gangs making millions in profit.”

With Channel crossings showing no sign of slowing, the UK and France face an uphill battle to stem the flow and dismantle the ruthless smuggling networks profiting from human misery.
