30-Year Cold Case Break? Royal Navy Mystery Takes Investigators to Gibraltar
New Excavation in Gibraltar Follows Fresh Leads
After more than three decades, the mysterious vanishing of Royal Navy Rating Simon Parkes has led police straight to Gibraltar. The Hampshire & Isle of Wight Constabulary dispatched a nine-strong team—including detectives and expert search officers—to dig deep in Town Range Car Park from August 7 to 10, hunting for any trace of the missing sailor.
Simon Parkes: The Young Sailor Who Disappeared Without a Trace
Simon, just 18 and a radio operator from Bristol, disappeared in December 1986. His ship, HMS Illustrious, was docked in Gibraltar when he went ashore—and never returned. Despite a huge manhunt, Simon was never seen again, leaving his family haunted and police chasing cold leads for decades.
Joint Forces Dig for Clues—But Come Up Empty
The operation was a combined effort by Hampshire & Isle of Wight Constabulary, Royal Gibraltar Police, Gibraltar Defence Police, and the Royal Navy. They focused on water tanks and surrounding areas, acting on new information. But the dig drew a blank—no new clues surfaced to crack the case.
Investigation Presses On, Family Remains Hopeful
“The investigation is ongoing,” said Detective Chief Inspector Adam Edwards. “We thank everyone involved and the public for their support. Simon’s parents have shown incredible dedication in their search for answers.”
As a mark of respect, officers visited Simon’s memorial to lay flowers, showing solidarity with the family. Meanwhile, police are urging anyone with information on his disappearance to come forward, urging calls to 101 referencing Operation Thornhill, or to contact Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
