American Spy Stabbed in Alleged Terror Attack Outside Cheltenham Leisure Centre

Police fear a knifeman deliberately targeted a US intelligence worker in a chilling terror attack at a Cheltenham leisure centre on Thursday night.

Victim Stabbed While Sitting in Car

The woman, believed to be an American spy seconded to GCHQ just three miles away, was stabbed while sitting in her car in the leisure centre’s car park at around 9.15pm. Despite serious injuries, she staggered to the sports centre staff for help just as it was closing to the public.

After emergency surgery, she remains in stable condition in hospital.

Suspect Arrested on Terror Charges

Police swiftly arrested a 29-year-old Cheltenham man at the scene. Initially charged with attempted murder, he was re-arrested 24 hours later on suspicion of preparing and instigating a terrorist act under the Terrorism Acts of 2000 and 2006.

Officers have been searching a property linked to the suspect, with Counter Terrorism Policing South East now leading the investigation.

Neighbours Speak Out, Officials Reassure

Locals recall seeing an argument between the victim and suspect in the car before the attack. One neighbour said: “They were either parked or just pulled in when she was stabbed. She managed to get out and get help.”

Another added: “It’s usually so quiet here. The police didn’t talk to nearby houses, so maybe they knew something beforehand.”

Local councillor Stephan Fifield said: “People are very curious. The centre was closing, so little reason to be there. There’s no history of terror here.”

Gloucestershire Constabulary Assistant Chief Constable Richard Ocone reassured the public: “We believe this was an isolated incident with no wider threat. Anyone with information should contact us on 101.”

A GCHQ spokesperson declined to comment.
