Kent Crackdown Targets Slave Labour in Nail Bars and Car Washes
Kent Police teamed up with Canterbury City Council, Kent Fire and Rescue Service (KFRS), The Gangmasters and Labour Abuse Authority, and the charity Stop the Traffik for a major blitz on suspected modern slavery hotspots.
Workers at Risk Given Vital Info and Support
The joint operation took place on World Day Against Trafficking in Persons, July 29 and 30, 2021. Officials visited 20 nail bars and car washes, speaking to over 80 workers and managers. They were informed about workers’ legal rights and offered advice on spotting and reporting human trafficking and modern slavery.
Importantly, those at risk were given a safe space to speak to officers confidentially.
Fire Safety Failures Spark Prohibition Notice
Meanwhile, Kent Fire and Rescue slapped a prohibition notice on one property for serious fire safety breaches, highlighting the dangerous conditions many exploited workers endure.
Officials Vow to Keep Up Pressure on Traffickers
“Kent Police is determined to protect the most vulnerable in our society,” said Sergeant Lee Thompson from Canterbury Community Safety Unit. “We will be back with more visits to build trust, gather intelligence, and take action where needed.”
“I hope everyone we met now understands how they should be treated at work and who to turn to if they face modern slavery.”
Cllr Joe Howes, Canterbury City Council’s lead for housing, added: “Many forced workers live in poor or unsafe accommodation. This operation helped us gather crucial intel on properties in our area and beyond, which we’ll tackle in the coming weeks.”
