Student Safety Crackdown in Canterbury
Police and local services hit Canterbury Christ Church University on October 13 to give freshers and second-years crucial safety tips. The Community Safety Unit teamed up with Canterbury City Council and Kent Fire and Rescue Service to help students settle into uni life without falling prey to crime.
Multi-Agency Team Hits the Streets
Kent Fire and Rescue handed out fire safety advice, while council wardens covered bin collections and warned about noise complaints. The joint task force plans to patrol student-heavy areas throughout October on the 19th, 22nd, 26th, and 28th to keep an eye on things.
Top Tips to Keep Your Stuff Safe
- Never leave expensive items on show in your house or car. Get them tagged for easy tracing if stolen.
- Lock all doors and windows – even if you’re just popping out for a moment.
- Remind housemates to keep the main external door locked at all times.
- Use timer lights or a radio to make it look like someone’s home and scare off burglars.
- Back up coursework online, not just on your laptop, to avoid losing vital files if stolen.
- Ask a friend or neighbour to watch your place when you’re away – they can also collect post to avoid obvious “empty house” signs.
Inspector Urges Students to Be Good Neighbours
“We want students to stay safe and avoid becoming victims of crime,” said Inspector Guy Thompson. “We also ask them to be mindful of local residents by keeping late-night noise and anti-social behaviour in check. Working with the universities and partner agencies lets us offer a one-stop shop for vital advice.”
With freshers flooding the city and face-to-face teaching back, the message is clear: stay alert, locked up, and respectful. Canterbury’s watching.
