Emergency Services Rush to Dramatic Plane Crash on Greater Manchester Moorland
Emergency teams raced to the scene of a light aircraft crash deep in Greater Manchester moorland late Tuesday morning. The incident triggered a large multi-agency response, including specialist air accident investigators.
Full-Scale Rescue Operation Launched
Crews from across Greater Manchester were scrambled at around 11.30am on 3rd February 2026 after reports of a small plane coming down in remote terrain. Firefighters still remain on site, supporting both Greater Manchester Police and the North West Ambulance Service.
The fire service confirmed they are assisting partner agencies but said police are best placed to comment on the crash’s circumstances.
Air Accident Investigation Branch Join Probe
The Air Accidents Investigation Branch (AAIB) has dispatched a specialist team to work alongside local emergency services. Their task: to uncover exactly what caused the crash.
Aircraft Details: Cirrus SR20 from Birmingham
The downed plane is believed to be a Cirrus SR20, built by Cirrus Design Corporation. Flight tracking shows it took off from Birmingham Airport just before 10am and stayed airborne for around 40 minutes before the crash.
Recent flights logged suggest the aircraft had been operating out of the West Midlands, making short hops between Birmingham and Wolverhampton. Investigators are exploring whether this was a training flight, though this has yet to be confirmed.
The plane is owned by Christopher Ian Young, director of Daedalus Aviation (Services) Ltd, which runs a Cirrus training centre in Birmingham. The company says it is “assisting the authorities” but declined further comment.
Occupant Details Still Unknown
No official word yet on how many people were aboard or the extent of any injuries. It’s also unclear if the pilot issued any mayday or emergency call before the crash.
Investigation Underway
The AAIB will comb through the wreckage, flight data, maintenance logs, and pilot records as part of its investigation. Police have sealed off the crash site as specialist teams continue their work.
This is a developing story. We’ll bring you more updates as soon as confirmed information is released by police or investigators.
