Klopp hails Arsenal fans for respectful silence amid tragedy tribute
Klopp praises Arsenal’s respectful tribute
Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp has praised Arsenal supporters for their complete silence during the minute’s silence at Friday’s Premier League clash at the Emirates Stadium. The German manager expressed his admiration for the respectful tribute, standing in stark contrast to recent incidents involving rival fans.
Apologies follow shocking ‘tragedy chanting’ from rival fans
Klopp’s praise comes after Manchester United and Chelsea fans faced backlash for singing offensive songs referencing the Hillsborough disaster, which claimed 97 lives. Both clubs issued apologies to Liverpool and their fans following the deeply hurtful chants.
Klopp calls for an end to “tragedy chanting”
The Liverpool manager condemned “tragedy chanting,” describing it as utterly unacceptable. He insisted such behaviour should be wiped out just like racist and sexist abuse in football.
“This kind of chanting must be eliminated in the same way as racist and sexist behaviour,” Klopp stated firmly.
Campaign gains traction to criminalise offensive chants
Survivors of the tragedy and their families are deeply upset by these offensive chants. An online petition calling for “tragedy chanting” to become a criminal offence has already attracted over 12,000 signatures.
The campaign has earned backing from former Liverpool striker John Aldridge and Joe Blott, chairman of the Liverpool fan group Spirit of Shankly.
Blott is part of a working group with reps from the Premier League, FA, EFL, Manchester United, Liverpool, and the Football Supporters Association. The group aims to tackle tragedy chanting through education and stronger enforcement, using existing powers under the Public Order Act.
“Education is vital to stop this vile chanting once and for all,” said Blott. “The power to act is there – it’s time football uses it.”
