Million-Pound Wimbledon Mansion Collapses During Basement Renovations
A luxury £1 million home in Wimbledon has dramatically collapsed overnight while the family were away. Builders working to install an underground swimming pool reportedly caused the two-storey house to cave in due to inadequate basement support.
Neighbours Evacuated Amid Collapse Chaos
The neighbouring properties were evacuated as a safety precaution. An off-duty police officer living nearby broke down the back door amid fears the owners—believed to be a local doctor—were trapped inside.
The millionaire’s row home, located on Derwent Avenue near Richmond Park, is in a prime London spot where average property prices hit around £1.3 million. Renovations were underway when the collapse happened in the early hours, leaving the street in shock.
Firefighters Launch Extensive Search
The London Fire Brigade received the emergency call just after 1:10am and rushed firefighters from New Malden, Wandsworth, Kingston, Battersea, and Heston stations to the scene. They conducted a thorough search of the debris and thankfully confirmed no one was inside when the house gave way.
Fire crews remained at the site until just before 5am, ensuring the area was safe and secure following the dramatic collapse.
