Vandals Smash Tram Stops in Bulwell and Basford

Tens of thousands of pounds worth of damage has been caused by vandals smashing touchscreen ticket machines and smashing shelters along tram stops between Moor Bridge in Bulwell and David Lane in Old Basford.

Youths Smash Shelters and Ticket Machines

The latest attack happened at Highbury Vale around 7.20pm on Monday, 24 April 2023. A rock thrown by one of a group of youths shattered the glass shelter.

Another incident occurred at Bulwell Forest Tram Stop on the evening of 3 March 2023. Two youths dressed in dark clothing smashed two ticket machines, causing costly damage. Despite CCTV reviews and searches, police have yet to identify those responsible.

Police Ramp up Patrols & Urge Public to Speak Up

Police have increased high visibility and plain clothes patrols in the affected areas. Targeted operations are underway to catch the offenders and hold them to account.

“This is far from being a victimless crime,” said PC Dan Marshall of the Bulwell neighbourhood policing team. “The ticket machines cost a substantial amount to repair and the vandalism causes real inconvenience to customers using the tram network.”

“We urge anyone with information to come forward. We are working closely with Nottingham Express Transit (NET) and won’t tolerate this mindless behaviour.”

NET Joins Police to Crack Down on Criminal Damage

A NET spokesperson said: “We’re determined to help clamp down on unacceptable behaviour and will push for the strongest penalties for offenders. Damage disrupts thousands of people who rely on the tram daily.”

“We operate a world-class system and share high-quality CCTV with police to identify and prosecute vandals.”
